The Role of the Community Council
What do we do? Officially the remit of the Community Council is to ascertain, co-ordinate and express to the Local Authority, and to public authorities, the views of the community it represents, and to take such action in the interests of that community as appears to it to be expedient and practicable.
The Community Council meets on the first Tuesday of every month (except Jully and January) at 7.15 for 7.30pm start. All meetings are open to the public. Local Councillors and a Community Police officer are usually in attendance.
The community Council is funded by East Lothian Council in three ways:
1. The Local Priorities Scheme (funding towards community events, eg. christmas lights, newsletter etc);
2. The Community Council Grant Allocation - a small grant towards administration costs;
3. The Community Environmental Fund (awards given for specific projects).
Further funds are raised at events held by the Community Council and there are also opportunities to bid for funds from other sources for projects.
A Community Council is a non-party political group of volunteers from the community which exists to represent the views of the community it serves. There is a maximum of 10 Community Councillors on Cockenzie and Port Seton Community Council.
We have co-opted members to help with certain projects or general work. We also have a pool of volunteers who help deliver newsletters, organise events and fundraising activities.
The Community Council deals with issues regarding the environment, safety and well-being, road safety, transport and roads, policing, planning and licensing within the local community.
If you are interested in joining the Community Council or have some time to spare each week, month or occasionally then please get in touch - we are always grateful for any help and support.
